Rivers to Conduct LGA Elections on October 5, 2024

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), has announced October 5, 2024, for conduct local government elections in the state.

The Chairman of RSIEC, Mr. Adolphus Enebeli made the announcement in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The Commission met with stakeholders and representatives of political parties in the state where it unveiled the timelines and guidelines for the conduct of the election.

With the announcement, all preparations for the conduct of the election has begun following the dissolution of the former council bosses whose tenure expired in June, 2024. Though some of the loyalists of the former governor of the state, Mr. Nyesom Wike had threatened to stay on in office saying that there was a law that extended their tenure.

With the announcement of the election timetable, political observers in the state believe that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has taken complete control of the local government system in the state haven earlier purged his cabinet of loyalists of Mr. Wike.
