For the first time in 10 years, Anambra State has announced date for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
In a statement issued on Monday in Awka, The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) announced that the election will hold on September 28, 2024.
The announcement obviously follows the July 11, 2024 judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria that empowered the Revenue Mobliisation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC) to pay directly the allocation of local governments to the account of the local government. Also, the judgement mandated the Federal Government to withhold the allocation of any local government that does not have an elected leadership, this is also in addition to stripping the state governor the power to suspend elected local government official.
During the last governorship election campaign in Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, the then candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and now governor of the state had promised to organise local government elections in the state.
However, after over two years in the saddle, Prof Soludo had blatantly refused to organise local government elections in the state.
However, on Monday, the Chairman of ANSIEC, Genevieve Osakwe, through a statement announced that it has released electioneering timetable for the much anticipated election.
Part of the statement reads:
“The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission wishes to inform all registered Political Parties and the general public that Local Government Elections in the State will be held on Saturday September 28, 2024.
“Election Timetable/Schedule of Activities and Other details can be collected from the Headquarters of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Awka, from Wednesday, 14th August, 2024.”
