Zulum Reaffirms Loyalty to Shettima, Urges Prayers for Credible Successor Ahead of 2027

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to Vice President Kashim Shettima, while calling on residents to intensify prayers for a worthy successor as the state approaches the 2027 governorship transition.
In a statewide address delivered on March 20, 2026, the governor emphasized the need for unity, sustained security efforts, and collective responsibility amid increasing political activities and lingering insurgency challenges in the region.
Zulum expressed heartfelt sympathy to communities affected by insurgency, acknowledging their resilience and sacrifices as critical to the gradual recovery of the state. He stressed that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and rebuilding affected areas.
The governor issued a stern warning to individuals and groups collaborating with insurgents, whether through intelligence sharing, shelter, or logistics, stating that such actors would be identified, tracked, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for releasing funds to support the Multi-National Joint Task Force and other ongoing security operations, describing the intervention as timely and vital to the fight against insurgency. Zulum also appreciated Vice President Shettima for representing the president during a recent sympathy visit to Borno, noting that the gesture underscored the federal government’s commitment to the state.
Reflecting on his administration since 2019, the governor said he has upheld principles of fairness, inclusiveness, and loyalty to all political stakeholders, including members of the National and State Assemblies. He urged political actors and aspirants to avoid actions capable of destabilizing the state, warning against the exploitation of the security situation for personal or political gain.
“As we approach the next political transition, we must place the interest of Borno above individual ambitions,” Zulum said, calling on citizens to remain peaceful and supportive of government efforts.
The governor concluded his address by seeking forgiveness from residents for any shortcomings during his tenure and reaffirmed his dedication to protecting the state. He also reminded citizens of the transient nature of political power, stating that ultimate authority rests with God.
