Vermont, a state in the northeastern region of the United States of America has advised parents and teachers and the general public in the state to stop referring to their wards as “daughter” or “son,” but rather use such terms as “child” or “kid.”
According to a publication released on Wednesday by the Vermont Department of Health (VDH), the reason for the new advisory is to be sensitive to inclusion of children who may not be living with their biological parents.
In the flier titled, “Inclusive Language for Families” the state further advised use the phrase “family members” instead of “household members.”
It also recommended using “family” instead of using “extended family.”
The release has elicited a lot of criticism from the public with some people accusing the VDH of trying to impose on parents “how to raise the family and children.
Others argue that the advisory was an unnecessary interference on gender issue that will rather confuse children.
