In the the western hemisphere, Guatemala and Suriname were affected bringing the total number to 29.

The Guardian UK newspaper reports that the affected career ambassadors and senior diplomats were appointed by the Joe Biden administration, suggesting that, President Trump wants to replace the diplomats with personnel that believe in his administration’s policies.

The newspaper quoted a State Department official as saying that the recall of the ambassadors was  “a standard process in any administration.” Reiterating that that an ambassador is “a personal representative of the president and it is the president’s right to ensure that he has individuals in these countries who advance the America First agenda.”

The diplomats according to the newspaper began receiving their letters of recall from last week Wednesday. Information available indicates that most of the diplomats would go back to Washington on January 2026.

In Nigeria, Ambassador Richard Mills resumed duty on May 2024 and was expected to serve at least two years under normal circumstances.
