Supeme Court to Deliver Judgement on LGA Autonomy Tomorrow

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled tomorrow, Thursday, July 11, 2024 to the deliver the judgement on the suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN against the governors of the 36 states over the autonomy of local governments in the country.

The Federal government had in May Approached the apex court to seek full autonomy for the 774 local government areas in Nigeria in line with constitutional provisions.

Consequently, Justice Garba Mohammed Lawal who leads a seven-panel of Supreme Court jurists on June 13, 2024 reserved judgement on the much awaited issue.

The governors in their different pleas through the attorney generals of the states, however, in their arguments called on the Supreme Court urged the court to dismiss the case as the constitution empowers them to be in charge of the local governments in the states.
