SSANU, NASU Embark on Nationwide Strike

A joint strike action embarked upon by members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) has grounded activities in universities nationwide.

The strike according to the unions was called over  “unfair treatment and disparity” the payment of salaries by the Federal Government.

The unions gave the federal government an ultimatum about two weeks ago when they threatened to down tools which would result in closure of hostels, switching off power, water and stoppage of sanitation and other duties performed by their members.

The National President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, disclosed that their have no been paid their salary arrears since 2022.

Confirming the strike action while featuring on a TV programme on Monday, the SSANU President said:

“As of today (Monday), all our workers in registry, bursary, works and maintenance, security, and students’ affairs have withdrawn their services and nothing moves within the administration of any public university in Nigeria and that will be the case for the next seven days until and unless the needful is done.”

The Federal Government is yet to react to the strike either through the minister of Education or the minister of Labour and Employment.
