Mrs. Nwanneka Ekeremadu, the wife of former Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu has been released from British prison.
Mrs. Ekweremadu who was convicted and jailed alongside her husband and a medical doctor on account of human organ trafficking arrived Enugu on Wednesday according family sources.
Justice Jeremy Johnson of the Old Bailey London Central Criminal Court sentenced Senator Ekweremadu to 9 years and 8 months in prison, while Mrs. Nwanneka Ekweremadu received a 4-year and 6-month term. Their intermediary, Dr. Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The trio were convicted of conspiracy to arrange for a young man, identified as David Nwamini, to travel from Nigeria to the UK, where he was to be exploited for his kidney, needed for their ailing daughter, Ms. Sonia Ekweremadu.
Their trial lasted six weeks at the London Central Criminal Court and they were subsequently convicted on May 5, 2023 for violating the Modern Slavery Act of the UK.
