Senate Probes Rising Cost of Data Services Amid Public Outcry

The Nigerian Senate has launched an investigation into the recent surge in data costs, following growing public concerns over the financial burden it places on citizens. The upper legislative chamber has tasked the Senate Committee on Communications with probing the hike and recommending measures for a more sustainable and business-friendly telecommunications sector.

As part of its resolutions, the Senate has also urged the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to engage with telecom operators to review pricing and ensure affordability for all Nigerians. Additionally, the ministry has been directed to develop a policy framework to guarantee affordable internet access nationwide.

Senator Ekpenyong decried the sudden increase in data tariffs and other telecom services, calling for an urgent review to prevent further hardship on citizens. His motion received widespread support from lawmakers, who unanimously endorsed the probe during a session presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Industry experts and consumer rights advocates have also voiced concerns over the rising cost of data services. The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have been urged to provide clarity on the factors driving these price hikes. Some analysts cite the rising cost of business operations, foreign exchange rates, and infrastructural challenges as major contributors to the increase.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations and advocacy groups have called for greater transparency in telecom pricing and improved regulatory oversight to protect consumers from unfair charges.

As the Senate’s probe unfolds, Nigerians will be keenly watching for outcomes that could lead to fairer pricing and improved internet accessibility across the country.
