The Governing Council of the Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja (formerly University of Abuja), has appointed Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Prof Fawehinmin’s appointment was announced during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of Council in Abuja on Friday.
In a statement signed by the acting spokesman of the university, Dr Habib Yakoob. “The appointment takes effect from Tuesday, 10 February 2026 and is for a non-renewable tenure of five years.”

Fawehinmi, a native of Ondo State is a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology and currently the VC of the Nigerian British University.
The appointment of the new Vice Chancellor brings to a close the lingering leadership crisis that has rocked the university in recent years. Prof Aisha Maikudi has held fort as the acting Vice Chancellor in the last six months with controversies trailing her reign and in her place, Prof Matthew Adamu was appointed also in acting capacity.
