President Bassirou Faye of Senegal in Gambia on His Inaugural State Visit
Thousands of Gambians on Saturday trooped out to welcome President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal who is visiting to explore bilateral cooperation with the country.
Gambian President, Adama Barrow who rose to power in similar circumstances as President Faye welcomed his visitor with military guard of honor.
The new Senegalese leader is focused on creating regional cooperation for shared prosperity according to his aides. The Gambian visit is President Faye’s first since he took power on April 1, 2024.
Later on Saturday in Banjul, the two leaders issued a joint communique pledging to maintain the Presidential Council and continue work together to enhance relations among the two West African nations.
According to Senegalese State House earlier Press Statement, “The Presidential Council, established in 2018 between the two countries, provides a forum to strengthen bilateral relations without administrative bottlenecks.
“It creates an opportunity for the two countries to converge and dialogue on significant issues of common interest and make concrete decisions for the mutual benefit of our two countries and peoples.
President Faye promised to continue from where his predecessor, Macky Sall stopped, while his host assured of his government’s commitment to the strong “strategic” relations between the two countries.
President Barrow also hinted that he will be visiting Senegal in a yet to be determined date for for the next presidential council meeting where further exploration of areas of cooperation will be discussed.
