Speaking at a media parley organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja, the Commissioner of Police warned that illegal mining is fuelling banditry, displacing communities, and draining Nigeria’s economy of *$9 billion (₦13.7 trillion) annually to illegal mining and gold smuggling — a staggering figure that weakens the economy and drains foreign exchange reserves.

“Illegal mining is not just an economic crime; it is a direct enabler of insecurity, environmental destruction, and the looting of our national wealth,” he said.the Commissioner warned that illegal mining is no longer a localised challenge but a national security threat.

Illegal mining is not just a mere economic crime; it is an act that fuels insecurity, degrades our environment, undermines lawful investment, and robs our nation of vital resources,” he said.

The Commissioner revealed that 72 suspects had been arrested between 2023 and 2024 in hotspots across the FCT, including Gwagwalada, Kuje, Gaube, and Katampe Extension ; commending the FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, for ordering a clampdown on the menace.

“The Hon. Minister has ordered a comprehensive clampdown on illegal mining in the FCT, and security agencies are working closely to ensure this directive is enforced.”

Echoing Solid Minerals Minister, Dr. Dele Alake, he noted that “powerful Nigerians” bankroll illegal mining operations, often resembling cartel-like structures, with proceeds used to fund banditry, terrorism, and violent crimes in Zamfara, Niger, Katsina, Kogi, and even parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Commissioner emphasised that journalists remain a crucial ally in the battle against illegal mining, urging them to build tight networks around mining sites, track illicit financial flows, and enlighten the public on the dangers of illegal mining.

“The role of the media is vital — from sourcing intelligence and exposing shell companies to educating communities in local languages on the harms of illegal mining. With your vigilance and our enforcement, we can defeat this menace,” he affirmed.

Ajao assured that security agencies are determined to work with the media to protect Nigeria’s natural resources, safeguard communities, and build a more prosperous nation.

“With your vigilance and our enforcement, this cartel-driven menace can be crushed. Together, we can secure our communities and safeguard Nigeria’s future,” the Commissioner said.
