The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, Oferekpe.
The Executive Secretary (ES) of NUC, Mr. Abdullahi Ribadu, presented the letter of approval the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru in Abuja on Thursday.
According to the NUC boss, the university becomes the 66th state university in Nigeria.
Nigeria university also brings to 278th university in Nigeria encompassing Federal, State and Private universities.
As part of the approval of the new ICT university, the NUC Executive Secretary also informed Governor Nwifuru that the commission will also officially forward the university’s approval to relevant educational support services organisation including Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund), the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The NUC boss said, “We will still have to undertake what is called resource verification, and the commission will visit when the university is ready.
“The commission needs to look at the state of affairs, look at the infrastructure, look at the classrooms, look at the library, and look at the staffing.
“After that, the commission will give the go-ahead for the commencement of academic activities as the 66th state university in the country.”
In his response, Governor Nwifuru assured the NUC that the university will be adequately funded noting that the state government had already commenced construction of the physical buildings in the university’s Permanent site, while principal officers of the new university had already been appointed to ensure proper supervision of the envisioned take-off of the university.
According to the governor, “On the gradual take-off of the university, the state government has already injected funds towards the construction of some strategic buildings.
“As of today, structures like the Senate building, the staff quarters, the students’ hostels, the faculty buildings, and the university library, among others, are at various stages of completion.”
