Enugu Air, Nigeria’s latest start-up airline is set to begin operations with two it newly acquired Brazilian made Embraer E170 jets.
The two jets already registered with registration numbers, 5N- ENU and 5N-ENR are currently at a Johannesburg, South Africa where they are being prepared for their august journey to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, their home ground.
A source close to the project told FACTSHEET on condition of anonymity (because they are not authorized to speak for the airline yet), that everything the airline needs to take to the skies including an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) was already being attended to as the Enugu State Government plans to unveil the aircrafts by early April.
The Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Mbah since he took over the reins of governance in the Southeast state has been working round the clock to turn around the economy of the state through economic diversification.
In December 2024 while presenting the Enugu State N971 billion budget for the year 2025, Governor Mbah had promised that Enugu Air was a priority for his government. He had promised that “Enugu Airline will be launched a few weeks’ time so that our brothers coming for Christmas will fly by our own Airline.”
The Governor also promised that “Our vision to grow our GDP is patently achievable. No citizen of this state need suffer poverty or penury. No segment of the state will be left out.”

True to his numerous promises, the state government has embarked on a massive urban renewal and infrastructure development to attract foreign capital to the state. The tourism potentials of the state have witnessed a lot of rejig with iconic projects including the Enugu Conference Centre, and a five star hotel have both been completed.
The coming of Enugu Air will further boost accessibility to the Coal City as Enugu is fondly called. The Akanu Ibiam International Airport currently hosts scheduled flights from Lagos and Abuja, while Ethiopian Airlines operates the only scheduled international flight from the airport.
