Nigeria in Darkness as Electricity Grid Collapses for the 8th Time in 9Months

Nigeria was on Monday evening thrown into darkness as the national electricity grid collapsed suddenly at about 6.49pm.

This is the 8th time the national grid is collapsing in the last 11 months.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) through a statement issued by its spokesman, Emeka Ezeh confirmed the grid collapse on Monday evening.

The statement read, the ËEDC wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today (Monday)

“This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across EEDC network.

“Consequently, due to thus development, all our interface Transmission Company of Niger (TCN) stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo.”

However, reacting to the system collapse, the spokesperson of the TCN, Ndidi Mbah state that the collapse was not “national” as the Ibom Power Distribution Company was “islanded” from the system to enable it supply electricity to consumers in the area.

She said:

“It was a partial system disturbance.”

“The entire system did not collapse as the IBOM Generating Station was ISLANDED (i.e. separated to stand alone to continue supplying some areas to avoid the entire system going down), to enable It to continue to supply through the Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132kv substations.

“Recovery is currently ongoing and has advanced significantly.”

Nigeria has progressively witnessed more and more national blackouts in the last one year as the system collapse has become a frequent happening in the country nearly on monthly basis.
