Former National Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chief Abia Onyike was on Wednesday night abducted by the Ebubeagu militia of Ebonyi State government in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Abia Onyike, a former Commissioner for Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi State was abducted at a popular pharmacy shop along Water Works Road, Abakaliki as he made to return to his house after purchasing some drugs at the store.
FACTSHEET can confirm that the former Commissioner and the Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifannyi Chukwuma Odii was taken to the dreaded Ebubeagu “torture chamber” at the old Government House, Abakaliki where he was stripped naked and tortured like a common criminal.
Chief Onyeike, however, was freed after the intervention of the some prominent citizens of the after his family and associates raised the alarm and declared him missing.
Chief Onyeike while speaking with FACTSHEET late on Wednesday night after he was released by his abductors narrated how he was humiliated, beaten with planks until his tormentors received a call after which they told him that he was mistaken for someone else.
The Ebubeagu militia established and dangerously armed by Governor David Umahi has been a torn on the flesh of residents of Ebonyi State. The militia has practically grounded all commercial activities in the state due to their unprecedented extortion, harassment and other human rights abuses. The militia according to Ebonyi residents are allegedly protected by the police whom they accuse of haven been compromised by the state government.
The PDP, Ebonyi State Government and the police authorities in the state had not reacted to the abduction of the former commissioner at the time of filing this report.
