NANS Urges Senate to Focus on Good Governance Amidst Rising Tensions

.... Calls on Senators to Prioritize National Interest, Uphold Integrity

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed deep concern over the recent heated exchanges within the Nigerian Senate, describing the trend of personal attacks and political bickering as a threat to national unity and the quest for good governance.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, March 6, 2025, by its President-Elect, Comrade Oladoja Olushola (PKA Ladoja NANS), the student body emphasized the need for lawmakers to refocus their legislative efforts on addressing pressing national issues rather than engaging in actions capable of undermining the sanctity of the National Assembly.

According to NANS, the 10th Senate, under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, has a critical role to play in supporting the Federal Government’s ongoing economic reforms, tackling inflation, reducing the cost of living, and fostering national harmony. The association warned that the growing culture of personal vendettas within the Senate could further heat up the political landscape and erode public confidence in the legislature.

“We reaffirm the vital role of lawmakers in delivering good governance and enacting legislation that directly impacts the well-being of Nigerians. However, this responsibility must be carried out with decorum, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to national interest,” the statement read.

While expressing confidence in the leadership of the Senate President, NANS called on all Senators to abide by the ethical standards of the legislative institution. The association urged the Senate to initiate appropriate disciplinary measures against any member found guilty of violating the Senate’s rules or inciting sentiments that could destabilize the nation, pending the court’s verdict on the alleged misconduct.

“We call on the Senate President to remain steadfast in fostering a strong synergy between the National Assembly and the Presidency, under the leadership of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This partnership is essential in delivering the dividends of democracy to Nigerians,” Comrade Oladoja added.

NANS further appealed to all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize peace-building, stressing that the unity, progress, and well-being of Nigerians must supersede political differences
