Nigeria’s iconic singer, Ms Onyeka Owenu MFR, has died at the age of 72 years.
The legendary singer, actor and administrator was confirmed dead at the Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island, Lagos on Tuesday night.
According to a source close to her, she was attending the birthday party of her friend, Mrs. Stella Okoli, where she actually performed some of her legendary lines when she collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.
A family sources who confirmed the unfortunate incident said that, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.
“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.”
Apart from her career in several genres of the arts, Onyeka Onwenu, she also had a stint in politics. She once served as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and and was later appointed the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development during the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
Onyeka Owenu was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. She began her music career in the early 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She has since released numerous globally acclaimed albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”
