Labour Won’t Embark on Strike Yet, NLC President, Joe Ajaero
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that the organised will not embark on strike on Tuesday at the expiration of the seven-day grace period given the federal government by the labour unions.
President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero on Monday in Abuja stated that labour will wait for the government to reveal its final decision before any decision on industrial action can be taken.
According to Ajaero, “We cannot declare strike now because the figures are with the President. We will wait for the President’s decision.
“During the tenure of the immediate past president, the figure that was proposed to him was N27,000 by the tripartite committee but he increased it to N30,000. We are hopeful that this president will do the right thing.”
The federal government is proposing N62,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers even as state governors have said that the figure is not “sustainable” as many states will not be able to pay.
It is expected that the federal government will make known its decision on the contentious wage issue by Tuesday.
