Labour Party Formally Requests INEC Recognition of Nenadi Usman as Chairman

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Alex otti of Abia State, the running mate of Mr. Obi, Datti Ahmed on Wednesday led a high-powered delegation to the Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to demand the immediate official recognition of the Senator Nenadi Usman led Caretaker Committee of the party.

Earlier, the LP stakeholders had held a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel where issues arising from the recent Supreme Court ruling that sacked the erstwhile national chairman of the party, Mr. Julius Abure was discussed.

At the NEC meeting Mr. Obi had suggested that the entire leadership of the party proceed to INEC headquarters to officially submit the party’s request for the recognition of the Caretaker committee so that “the rebuilding” of the party can begin.

At the Commission, Governor Otti formally presented the certified true copy (CTC) of the unanimous Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the caretaker committee of the party to the electoral umpire.

Confirming the LP visit, INEC in a statement shared on its social media platforms affirmed the the LP delegation was received by the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Sam Olumekun.

The INEC statement reads:

“A high-level delegation of the Labour Party (LP), led by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, on Wednesday visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to discuss key developments within the party.

 

 

“During the visit, Governor Otti formally presented a Certified True Copy of the recent Supreme Court judgement concerning the party’s leadership. He noted that the meeting was aimed at fostering clarity, mutual understanding, and institutional alignment regarding the LP’s current structure.

 

“The delegation was received by INEC’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Sam Olumekun, and other National Commissioners. Both parties engaged in discussions centered on enhancing collaboration and reinforcing democratic values.

 

 

“Mr. Olumekun reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the rule of law in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.”
