Kano Court Sentences Chinese Man to Death for Killing Nigerian Girlfriend
A 47-year-old Kano based Chinese national, Frank Geng Quangrong has been sentenced to death by a Kano State High Court for killing his Nigerian girlfriend.
Quandong who was earlier charged to court by the state government was convicted for killing 23-year-old Ummukulsum Buhari, his lover.
The convicted Chinese man was convicted for committing the murder in September 2022 after accusing late Ms. Buhari of refusing his marriage proposal after allegedly exploiting him.
Delivering judgement, Justic Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji held that the prosecution proved its case beyond all reasonable doubt and subsequently sentenced the convict to death by hanging.
The judge stated that “The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty.”
In addition, the judge opened a window for a reprieve for the condemned man, saying: “I hereby recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict.”
Recounting the event that led to the death of the Ms. Buhari, the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, who is also the prosecution counsel, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on 16 September 2022, at Janbulo Quarters Kano.
Narrating further, the prosecution stated that the convict September 16, 2022 at about 9 p.m. stabbed the victim with a knife in her house situated at Janbulo Quarters, Kano thereby committing an offence that contravenes the provision of section 221(b) of the Penal Code.
He said that “The victim was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”
In his plea of not guilty, the defendant had told the court that he stabbed the victim in self-defense.
“I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but I stabbed her in self-defence after she grabbed my testes,” the convict had told the court.
