The Supreme Court of Nigeria has set aside a court of Appeal judgement that affirmed Mr. Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

Delivering judgement on Friday in Abuja, five justices of the apex court held that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to have pronounced Abure the National Chairman of the LP.
The court affirmed that the issue of party leadership was an internal prerogative of the party which no court has jurisdiction. The court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and one other person as being valid and meritorious, while it dismissed the cross appeal filed by a faction of the Labour Party led by Mr. Abure.
With the judgement, the caretaker committee of the LP headed by Senator Nenadi Usman is now the substantive leadership of the opposition party.
