The South Korea National Assembly has impeached the country’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol even as the embattled president vowed to “never give up.”
The impeachment which was the second attempt in the last two weeks saw 204 lawmakers out of the 300 voting for the President’s ouster.
President Yoon had after the vote reiterated his resolve to fight on saying, “While I may come to a stop for now, the journey toward the future that I have walked with the people over the past two and a half years must never be halted.”
It is now up to the constitutional court to rule to uphold the impeachment or quash it.
Bloomberg news reports that the South Korean constitution requires a panel of at least seven jurists- panel to hear the impeachment matter in which at least six members must concur to uphold the impeachment.
The court, however, currently has only six judges.
It is unclear if the constitutional court will go ahead to hear the matter.
in the meantime, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has now taken over as the Acting President pending a decision from the constitutional Court.
Yoon got into hot water when he declared martial law on December 3, an unprecedented move in the near four decades of South Korea’s Democratic experience.
Though the decision lived barely six hours but it was enough to undue Yoon’s equally meteoric rise to power two years ago.
More than 200, 000 Koreans swammed the parliament in anticipation of Mr. Yoon’s impeachment vote. The outed President’s action rattled the Asian nation and was seen as an affront on the country’s democracy and blooming economy.
Mr. Yoon who seem determined to fight on has taken responsibility for his actions saying , “I will take to heart all the criticism, encouragement and support directed at me and do my utmost for the nation until the very end.”
