The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced new date for the 2027 general elections.
In a new timetable issued on Thursday in Abuja, the presidential and National Assembly has now been brought forward and will now hold on January 16, 2027.
According to the new timetable signed by INEC National Commissioner, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, , Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, governorship and state House of Assembly elections will now hold on February 6, 2027.

The new date follows the recent assent to the 2025 Electoral Act by President Bola Tinubu.
FACTSHEET reported that INEC had earlier scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly contests were to be conducted on March 6, 2027.
Aside from the new electoral law, stakeholders and politicians had protested the February date of the presidential election for falling within the Holy month of Ramadan and Lent.
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar had raised the alarm over coincidence of the date and the Muslim fasting month.
