JUST IN: Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu Impeached
The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached the embattled deputy governor of the state, Comrade Philip Shaibu.
The impeachment which took place around 9am on Monday followed the earlier adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the state Chief Judge to probe allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the former deputy governor.
FACTHEET reported that the impeachment proceedings commenced after Shaibu confronted the governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki over the governorship ticket of the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Shaibu had conducted a parallel primary election where he had emerged as the candidate of the party despite all efforts to reconcile him with his boss’ position.
The seven -man panel set up by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa. had on Friday submitted its report to the House of Assembly despite the fact that neither Shaibu nor his legal counsels appeared before the panel to give their own side of the story.
The panel led by retired Justice Stephen A. Omonuwa after submitting its report on Friday sealed the fate of Shaibu as it was just a matter of time before he was removed by the House of Assembly.
