IGP Tunji Disu Inaugurates 8-Man State Police Implementation Committee

The newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, (IGP) Tunji Disu, has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police and the rollout of his policing vision.

IGP Disu was decorated and confirmed  the 23rd indigenous IGP by President Bola Tinubu in a brief ceremony at the Presidential Villa earlier on  Wednesday.

The new IGP’ s appointment was earlier ratified by the Nigeria Police Council.

Professor Olu Ogunsakin has been  appointed to lead the eight-member state police implementation committee.

Confirming the inauguration of the committee in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the Force spokesman, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin stated that the proposed state police will not in anyway displace or replace the federal police.

He explained that the committee is mandated to study existing state policing models in order to determine the best model suitable for Nigeria,

Part of the statement reads:

“ During the Conference, IGP Tunji Disu formally inaugurated the Steering Committee on the Establishment of State Police, describing the assignment as both significant and timely in light of evolving security challenges across the federation. He noted that the concept of State Police is being carefully examined as part of broader national efforts to improve security governance, bring policing closer to the people, and deepen community participation in crime prevention.

 

“The Committee is mandated to review existing policing models within and outside Nigeria; assess community security needs and emerging risks; propose an operational framework for the establishment and coordination of State Police structures; address recruitment, training, standards, and resource allocation issues; and develop robust accountability and oversight mechanisms to ensure professionalism and broaden public trust.

 

“He also clarified that State Policing is not intended to replace or diminish the Nigeria Police Force, but rather to function as a complementary structure within a coordinated national security framework that strengthens national cohesion and institutional effectiveness.

Members of the committee include, Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General, National Institute for Police Studies, Jabi, Abuja, as Chairman; CP Bode Ojajuni as Secretary; DCP Okebechi Agora; DCP Suleyman Gulma; ACP Ikechukwu Okafor; CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho; and CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd), Provost, Police Public Relations School.

 

Also, as part of a new shift in policing strategy, the new IGP, according Humdeyin has announced plans “to strengthen internal oversight, directing that the Public Complaint Unit and X-Squad be empowered to operate independently.”
