House of Representatives Pushes for Federal Institute for Vision and Optical Research Across Six Geo-Political Zones
The Nigerian House of Representatives is advocating for the establishment of the Federal Institute for Vision and Optical Research in each of the country’s six geo-political zones. This move is aimed at addressing the increasing prevalence of visual impairments and enhancing optical research nationwide.
Hon. Victor Obuzor, representing Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Federal Constituency in Rivers State, disclosed the initiative, emphasizing its importance in tackling eye-related ailments that are becoming a significant public health concern in Nigeria.
“The alarming rate of visual impairments in Nigeria necessitates immediate action. Establishing these institutes will provide a structured approach to research, prevention, and treatment of eye-related diseases,” Obuzor stated.
The proposal has gained traction among lawmakers and health stakeholders, who argue that Nigeria lacks sufficient research facilities dedicated to vision sciences. During a recent public hearing, experts voiced their support for the bill, emphasizing the need for specialized centers.

Stakeholders expressed concerns over the rising cases of blindness and other vision disorders in Nigeria. “The establishment of these institutes will be a milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, ensuring that millions receive proper diagnosis and treatment,” a health expert at the hearing remarked.
The House Committee on Specialty Healthcare has also expressed its commitment to expanding medical services through legislative measures. reports says that the committee is considering multiple bills aimed at strengthening the healthcare system, including the proposed Federal Institute for Vision and Optical Research.
Hon. Obuzor reiterated that the institutes, once established, would play a crucial role in vision science research and professional training for optometrists and ophthalmologists. “This will not only enhance research but also improve healthcare delivery by providing specialized treatment facilities in different regions of the country,” he explained.
