Hackers Attack Ugandan Central Bank, Steal $17.8 million

Hackers have stolen 62 billion Ugandan Shilling, equivalent of $17.8 million in an unprecedented attack on the East African Central Bank.

The attack, according to the state-owned newspaper, New Vision newspaper reported that hackers have been identified to have operated from Southeast Asia.

According to the newspaper, the hackers identified themselves as “Waste.”

The massive hacking event reportedly took place in September 2024 and part of the stlen money were sent to accounts in the UK and Japan.

The hackers according to reports illegally accessed the IT system of the bank and transferred the funds from the bank.

However, the newspaper also reported that the Central Bank had recovered half of the stolen money prompting the country’s longstanding president, Yoweri Museveni to order thorough investigation into the matter.
