FG Approves Establishement of Nine New Private Universities

The Federal Government has announced the approval of establishment of nine new private universities in various parts of the country.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa announced that there were 551 pending applications for the establishment of universities by some organisations and individuals.

According to the minister, the newly approved private universities are, Tazkiyah University, Kaduna State; Leadership University, Abuja; Jimoh Babalola University, Kwara State; Bridget University, Mbaise, Imo State; Greenland University, Jigawa State; JEFAP University, Niger State; Azione Verde University, Imo State; Unique Open University, Lagos State; and American Open University, Ogun State.

Dr. Alausa disclosed that the 551 pending applications after they were subjected to rigorous were reduced to 79 and out of the 79, only nine have been approved.

The minister stated that  “Due to inefficiencies within the NUC, approvals were delayed. We have since introduced reforms to streamline these processes, and today’s approvals are a result of clearing this backlog.”
