The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered and dismantled a suspected internet fraud training camp, popularly referred to as a “Yahoo academy,” in the Karu area of Abuja, arresting 31 suspects during a coordinated sting operation.

The raid, which took place at Becki Estate in Karu, led to the apprehension of two alleged ringleaders believed to be masterminding the illicit operation, alongside several individuals described as trainees.

In a statement issued by the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency disclosed that operatives recovered a number of incriminating items from the premises. These include multiple mobile phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic devices suspected to have been used in carrying out cybercrime activities.

Preliminary investigations by the EFCC revealed that some of the recruits were lured from Benue State under the guise of legitimate job opportunities. Upon arrival, however, the individuals were allegedly confined within the facility, with their movements heavily restricted.

Further findings suggest that the recruits were trained in internet fraud schemes and provided with the necessary tools to carry out such activities. The agency also reported that strict disciplinary measures were enforced to ensure compliance among the trainees.

The EFCC described the operation as part of its sustained crackdown on cybercrime networks across the country, particularly those exploiting young Nigerians through deceptive recruitment tactics.

The Commission confirmed that all suspects currently remain in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to dismantling organized cybercrime syndicates and warned members of the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent job offers and similar schemes.
