Despite Security Invasion, Lagos Assembly Convenes, Lawmakers Pass Confidence Vote on Speaker Mojisola Meranda
Despite the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by combined operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Nigeria Police, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mojisola Meranda has successfully convened the House plenary.
Trouble broke out in the Lagos parliament when security operatives broke into the chamber and also tried to cordon off the Speakers office.
However, both the lawmakers and the staff of the House stood their ground, confronted the operatives who eventually retreated allowing the House to commence their legislative duties.
Amid the crisis which is occasioned by the refusal of the impeached former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, 36 out of the 40 lawmakers in the House unanimously passed a vote-of-confidence on Hon. Meranda’s leadership of the House as the Speaker.
In a motion moved by the member representing Oshodi/Isolo II state constituency, Hon. Oladipo Ajomale and seconded by the member representing Ikorodu State Constituency II, Hon. Aro Moshood all the 36 members present affirmed their confidence and support for Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
Though tension remains high around the House, the lawmakers said they remain in control of the parliament despite the presence of what one of the lawmakers described as “Inordinate ambition of and entitled anti- democratic forces.”
FACTSHEET reports that more than 14 security vans with heavily armed operatives are currently around the Lagos State House of Assembly.
