Democracy Day: NYO Advocates Improved Judicial Process  

 

The President of the Nigeria Youth Organization (NYO), Comrade Okorie C. OKorie has called  for  improved and speedy judicial process as a key to strengthening the Nigerian democracy.

 

Okorie said this in an interview with journalists  on the occasion of Nigeria’s commemoration of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Abuja.

 

He urged the country’s judiciary to rise to the occasion of not only defending democracy but sustaining it with equitable, fair and timely dispensary of justices.

 

“May I use this medium to call on our judiciary to help protect our democracy with timely and just dispensary of judgements.

 

“Justice they say delayed is denied, we should try to be dispensing justices at expected times with equity and fairness,” he said.

 

He called on the judiciary to always nullify charades and shams conducted in the names of elections.

 

According to him, our courts should make verdicts that condemn electoral malpractices without fear or favour.

 

The NYO President who congratulated Nigerians on celebration of democracy, called for an all Youth-inclusive government.

 

Okorie urged Nigerians to support the inclusiveness of youths at all tiers of government beginning from the federal to the state and local government councils.

 

He explained that such inclusion was necessary for national development and prosperity.

 

Okorie also commended the Attorney General of the Federation for rising in defence of local government autonomy.

 

The NYO boss said that local governments as third tiers of government cannot be stifled in true democracies because they are the closest to the people.

 

Okorie identified financial and political autonomy as fundamental in engendering development in the local governments.

 

The NYO President advised the Federal government to ensure that political autonomy is granted local governments by allowing INEC to conduct elections for them.

 

He urged Nigerians to support the Attorney General to restore the autonomy of local governments for development of the grassroots.

 

Recall that the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), recently instituted a suit against 36 state governors over local governments autonomy at the Supreme court

 

The AGF, Chief Lateef Fagbemi is seeking an order to better guarantee the independence of the local governments.
