Corruption Allegations Against Me Are ‘Fictitious,’ Can’t Be Proven- Impeached Lagos Speaker, Obasa

The impeached former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has said that the plan to impeach him succeeded because he was away from Lagos when his political enemies hatched and perfected his removal from office.

Obasa also accused the Commissioner of Police in the state of being complicit in his removal from office.

Speaking to his supporters at his Ikeja GRA home during a welcome party organised by his supporters and constituents, the veteran Lagos parliamentarian denied the allegations of corruption and diversion of public funds maintaining that the allegations were “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”

“If I am not Speaker, that’s not the end of the world. If you want to claim that I am corrupt, please prove it,” Obasa reiterated.

Speaking on the role of police in his removal, the former speaker said that the commissioner of police deployed over 200 policemen to cordon- off his residents in Agege and Ikeja while the impeachment process lasted.

He, however, said that he was grateful for the support he enjoys from his constituents who have repeatedly elected him into the House for six consecutive tenures since 2007.

The former Speaker said:

“I appreciate the members of the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state. He is my brother and he always calls me his younger brother.”

“I am not afraid of being removed. After all, it is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I am representing my people and they have returned me six times. If you want to do anything, do it well.

“They did the removal all because I was out of the country. Lagos is a special place, we cannot denigrate the state

“When former speaker, Jokotola Pelumi was removed, he was in the Assembly and we did not invite policemen. When my sister, former deputy speaker of the House, Adefunmilayo Tejuosho was removed, we did not invite the police

“They should not discredit an innocent person. They should prove their allegations against me. The Lagos State House of Assembly is above the common standard of excellence.

“I believe in the image of our institution. We must not destroy it and I will never partake in its destruction.

Hon. Obasa was overwhelmingly voted out by his colleagues on January 13 and immediately installed his erstwhile deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda.

Meranda is the first ever female Speaker of a state House of Assembly in any of the six states in the Southwest.
