Appeal Court Upturns Ex CJN Onnoghen’s Conviction, Restores His Seized Funds

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has discharged and acquitted a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, from his conviction for false asset declaration by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

Delivering judgment, Justice Abba Bello Mohammed also ruled that four bank accounts of the former CJN which he had forfeited to the government be returned to him.

Speaking on the judgement, the counsels of the former CJN, Adegboyega Awomolo SAN  and Ogwu James Onoja SAN, expressed happiness over the ruling of the appellate court.

Onnoghen was convicted on April 18, 2019 by Justice Umar Yakubu Danladi of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
