Akpabio Nominated into APU Committee Ahead of 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio alongside the Speakers of the parliaments of Angola, Algeria and Ivory Coast have been nominated into the planning committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) ahead of the forthcoming 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament scheduled to hold in Switzerland in 2025.

The nomination of Senator Akpabio was contained in a statement issued by the General Secretary of the APU to the General Secretary of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU), Mr. Martin Chungong over within the week. The statement which was relayed to journalists in Abuja by the Special Assistant to the President of the Senate, Jackson Udom, read in part:

“Mr. General Secretary, I am pleased to bring to your attention that after the virtual meeting of the Geo Political Group, held on March 7th, 2024, the following members have been designated to be in the Preparatory Committee for the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.”

The Committee is to plan the participation of African parliaments and parliamentarians at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments scheduled to hon on August 4, 2025 in Switzerland.

Other members of the committee include,  Madam Carolina Cerqueira, Speaker of the National Assembly of Angola; Mr Adams Bictogo, Speaker of the National Assembly of Coted’Ivoire and Mr Brahim Boughali, Speaker, National Popular Assembly of Algeria.

Senator Akpabio led Nigeria’s delegation to the IPU’s 147th General Assembly in October 2023, breaking 59 years jinx. He is the first Nigerian to be elected into the committee since 1964.
