Edo Elections: President Tinubu Calls for Peaceful Exercise 

In preparation for the upcoming Edo governorship elections on Saturday, the 21st, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the importance of “peace, civility, and decorum.” He called on all governorship candidates, political parties, and their supporters to “uphold and respect the democratic process.”

 

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President urged all stakeholders in the Edo State governorship elections to conduct themselves “peacefully and sportingly.” He expressed his belief in the voters’ capacity to make informed choices about their future leaders and urged politicians to “respect the people’s will.”

 

President Tinubu highlighted that “democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game.” He noted the commitment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a “free and fair election” and called for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a successful and peaceful process.

 

He commended the governorship candidates and political parties for focusing their campaigns on key issues like “improving livelihoods, promoting economic growth, and contributing to the development of Edo State.”

 

The President encouraged all citizens to remain “peaceful and respectful” throughout the voting process and to resolve any disagreements amicably through the appropriate authorities. Additionally, he expressed confidence in the “professionalism and integrity” of security agencies and INEC officials, urging them to “remain impartial and avoid any actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.”

 

The Edo State governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
