September 14 Now Final Deadline for NIN-SIM Linkage- NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has designated September 14 as the final deadline for linking National Identification Numbers (NIN) with Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM).

NCC spokesperson Reuben Muoka announced this on Wednesday, directing all mobile network operators (MNOs) to complete the verification and linkage by September 14, 2024. Muoka revealed that more than 153 million SIMs have been linked to NINs, reflecting a 96 percent compliance rate, up from 69.7 percent in January 2024.

From September 15, 2024, the NCC expects all SIMs in Nigeria to be linked to a valid NIN. The commission, working with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has identified several cases of non-compliance.

The NCC is dedicated to working with security agencies and other stakeholders to address issues related to pre-registered SIMs, aiming to safeguard national security and ensure the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.

Individuals who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage or have faced issues are encouraged to visit their service providers to update their information before the deadline. Self-service portals are also available. The NCC warns that selling or purchasing pre-registered SIMs is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment and fines, and urges citizens to report such activities via the toll-free line (622) or through social media.
