To enhance immunization programmes across Kano State in Northwest Nigeria, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has inaugurated a 25-member State Taskforce on Immunization.
This initiative aims to improve success in immunization and primary healthcare services in the state.
Governor Yusuf explained that the Taskforce members were selected based on their proven expertise and track records, with the goal of making a significant positive impact. “They are also tasked with reviewing and adopting the state’s annual immunization work plan, ensuring that it aligns with the State Health Annual Operation Plan (AOP),” he said.
The Taskforce’s duties include providing leadership and support for immunization activities and other primary healthcare services. “Other key duties include conducting quarterly reviews of the immunization work plan, advocating for timely and adequate resource allocation, ensuring the judicious use of funds, and monitoring progress in Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health plus Nutrition (RMNCAAH+N) indices,” he added.
The Taskforce will review routine immunization delivery to ensure all eligible children are reached and provide quarterly updates to the State Executive Council. Governor Yusuf expressed the expectation that the Taskforce will offer necessary oversight, political, and technical support to eradicate vaccine-preventable diseases in the state.
The Taskforce will be chaired by State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who also serves as the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, with Commissioner of Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf as co-chair.
Additionally, Governor Yusuf has directed the completion of the abandoned Phase II renovation project at Nuhu Bamalli Maternity Hospital, which includes additional wards and staff offices.
He also instructed the State Ministry of Health to promptly furnish the facility to resume healthcare services without delay.
To regulate traditional medicine practice in the state, Governor Yusuf has screened and certified over 5,000 vendors from 28 local government areas. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare service delivery and emphasized the importance of collaboration between traditional and modern medicine.
National President of the Traditional Medicine Association, Alhaji Shaba Maikudi, commended Governor Yusuf for his support and suggested the establishment of a Traditional Medicine Board to further integrate traditional practices into the state’s healthcare system.
