PRP Advocates for Peaceful Protest

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called for a peaceful approach to the nationwide protest titled #EndBadGovernance, set to take place from August 1 to 10, 2024.The party highlighted that the right to protest is protected under the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).

In a statement signed by PRP National Chairman Falalu Bello, the party urged protesters to respect the rights of all Nigerians, whether they are participating in the protests or not.  Bello also appealed to the Nigerian government to heed the protesters’ demands by implementing good governance practices, including addressing excessive and wasteful spending.

He noted that the PRP recognizes the constitutional right of citizens to protest and exercise their fundamental freedoms, particularly as outlined in Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association.

He stated that protests have played a crucial role in our democratic process, allowing citizens to voice their grievances and demand change.

The Party Chairman further noted that the current wave of protests reflects the resilience and determination of Nigerians to seek better governance and improved living conditions.

Mr. Bello posited that over the past nine years, the PRP has consistently advocated for good governance by calling for reduced government spending, combating corruption, and ensuring transparency in public dealings.

He stated that while the PRP advocates for peaceful resolution, the party also calls on protesters to exercise their rights responsibly and avoid violence, vandalism, or harm to others.

The party chieftain said the PRP calls on the government to engage with reasonable voices, including the protesters, to address issues such as excessive expenditures, corruption, and insecurity.

He urged protesters to be respectful of all Nigerians, including those not participating in the protests and to desist from vandalisation of private and public property
