Gov Battle: Fear Grips Kano Residents Over Impending Supreme Court Judgement
There is palpable fear in Kano State as the Supreme Court will tomorrow Friday January 12, 2024 to deliver judgement on the appeal filed by Governor Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) seeking to upturn the judgement of the Court of Appeal that removed him as the state governor.
The Appeal Court judgement upheld the ruling of the Kano State governorship election petition tribunal that Mr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was the validly elected governor of the Northwest state after ballot papers that were not endorsed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deducted from the result of the NNPP candidate.
Malam Kabir Mohammed, a resident of Kano and staunch supporter of the APC told FACTSHEET that they “have intelligence that some members of the NNPP have concluded plans to make Kano city chaotic on Friday should the Supreme Court uphold the judgement removing the governor.”
our correspondent who went round parts of Kano city reports that many residents were frantically shopping for food items to enable them stay indoors to avoid being caught up with possible violence in the state.
However, several prominent leaders in the state and civil society organisations have been preaching peace urging supporters of both NNPP and APC to maintain the peace irrespective of the angle the apex court judgement may swing.
FACTSHEET also gathered that all the security agencies in the state including the military were already on red alert to forestall any breakdown of law and order in the state.
Speaking on the impending judgement, the secretary of the NNPP legal team, Bashir Tudun while speaking with the media on Wednesday said that “it is officially confirmed. They have told us to appear on Friday for the judgment.” The lawyer also affirmed that the Supreme Court has directed that each party in the case must be represented only by two lawyers.
