
Hon. Yekini Idiaye, the lawmaker representing Akoko Edo II State Constituency of Edo State has been elected the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

His emergence follows the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku as the speaker.
Hon. Idaiyi was elected Speaker during Monday’s plenary session after Agbebaku’s resignation letter was formally presented to the House.
The sitting, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu, witnessed a change in the leadership of the legislature amid reports of internal moves against Agbebaku.
At the commencement of proceedings, Atu announced the receipt of Agbebaku’s resignation letter, paving the way for the election of a new Speaker.
The member representing Esan South East Constituency, Sunday Ojiezele, nominated Idaiyi for the position, while the nomination was seconded by the member representing Owan East Constituency, Hon. Eric Okaka.
The new speaker was subsequently sworn-in by the Clerk to the House.
The former Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku who represents Owan West State Constituency had held sway since 2023 has in recent past faced series of turbulences arising from his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) immediately Governor Monday Okpehbolo was inaugurated as governor.
Hon Agbebaku also face challenges from his constituency over perceived lack of government presence .
