BURGEONING INSECURITY: Senate Breaks Recess, to Reconvene on Tuesday

The Nigerian Senate has announced it will reconvene on Tuesday June 23, 2026 to deliberate on burning national issues, especially the burgeoning security challenges occasioned by escalating terrorist activities in parts of the country.

The Senate last week embarked on a two-week recess to allow lawmakers meet with their constituents as politicians conclude plans to start campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, in a notice issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, lawmakers were directed to reconvene at the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

According to the notice, the emergency sitting was convened on the directive of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to enable the upper legislative chamber to address matters requiring urgent legislative attention.

The communication indicated that discussions would centre on national security concerns and other critical issues considered to be of significant importance to the country.

The Senate expressed regret over any inconvenience the recall may cause lawmakers and urged all members to make the necessary arrangements to attend the session.

The emergency plenary comes amid increasing concerns over security challenges in several parts of the country, which are expected to dominate deliberations.
