Nigeria Cracks Down on Unauthorized Drone Use, Warns Offenders of Jail Term

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a stern warning to drone operators across the country, cautioning that operating unmanned aerial vehicles without proper authorization could result in imprisonment and confiscation of equipment.
The directive, communicated through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), underscores the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening airspace safety and national security amid rising drone usage for commercial, recreational, and surveillance purposes.
According to aviation authorities, all drone operators are required to obtain clearance and relevant permits before deploying their devices. This includes registration of drones, certification of operators, and approval for specific flight operations, especially in sensitive or restricted areas such as airports, government installations, and densely populated zones.
Officials emphasized that failure to comply with these regulations constitutes a violation of Nigeria’s civil aviation laws and could attract severe penalties. These penalties include fines, seizure of drones, and possible jail terms for offenders.
A spokesperson for the NCAA noted that while drones present significant opportunities for sectors such as agriculture, filmmaking, logistics, and security, their misuse poses serious risks. “Unauthorized drone flights can interfere with manned aircraft operations and compromise public safety. We urge all operators to adhere strictly to laid-down guidelines,” the spokesperson said.
The warning also highlighted the increasing use of drones for illicit activities, including unauthorized surveillance and smuggling, prompting authorities to tighten enforcement measures nationwide.
Security agencies have been directed to collaborate with aviation regulators to identify and apprehend violators. The government reiterated that ignorance of the law would not be accepted as an excuse, urging both individuals and organizations to regularize their drone operations promptly.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move but called for greater public awareness and streamlined licensing processes to encourage compliance without stifling innovation.
As drone technology continues to expand in Nigeria, authorities insist that safety and regulation must remain a top priority to prevent potential hazards and ensure responsible use of the country’s airspace.
