No Obstacle Too Great for Nigeria to Overcome -Deputy Speaker, Kalu
...Says Legislator-of-the-Year Award Call to do More
The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has said that Nigeria can overcome its challenges through more focused legislative action, executive commitment, and citizen engagement.
Kalu made this submission on the heels of his recognition as the Legislator of the Year 2025 by Leadership Newspaper on Thursday in Abuja.
In a statement, the Deputy Speaker who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State said that the award is a call for him to do more for his constituents and the nation in general.
He said: “This recognition, however, is not mine alone. It belongs to every Nigerian who believes that legislation must serve the people, not the privileged; that representation must amplify the voiceless, not silence them; and that
governance must be measured not by speeches delivered, but by lives
transformed.
“As a proud member of the All Progressives Congress, I am honored to
serve under a party that has consistently prioritized infrastructure development, economic diversification, and social inclusion. The APC remains the political vehicle through which millions of Nigerians have dared to hope again. Our task now is to ensure that this hope translates into tangible socio-economic transformation in every local government, every ward, and every household.
“Legislation must be people-centered. It must emerge not from the ivory
towers of theory, but from the soil of our constituents’ struggles, aspirations, and dreams. Every bill we sponsor, every motion we move, every amendment we propose must answer one question: Does this improve the life of the common Nigerian?
“This award challenges me and all of us in public service to remember that
laws are not abstract texts, but instruments of justice, equity, and human
dignity.
“This honour comes with responsibility. It is a call to do more, to reach
further, to legislate with even greater courage and compassion. The

challenges before us as a nation are immense. But I am convinced that
with focused legislative action, executive commitment, and citizen engagement, there is no obstacle too great for the Nigerian spirit to overcome.”
Kalu paid homage to the exemplary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and the leadership of the National Assembly for the synergy that exists between the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Deputy Speaker also expressed gratitude to Leadership Newspaper for finding him worthy of the award and holding government accountable to the people through their reportage.
“Let me acknowledge the visionary leadership of His Excellency,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. I must also acknowledge the
exemplary leadership of Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House
of Representatives. I salute Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the
Senate, for his statesmanship and the seamless synergy between both
chambers of the National Assembly.
“To Leadership Newspaper, thank you for holding us accountable. A free
press is the oxygen of democracy, and your fearless journalism ensures
that we, the elected, never forget that power is a trust, not a trophy.
“To my constituents in Bende Federal Constituency, you are my inspiration.
Every legislative session, I carry your voices, your hopes, and your
expectations into the hallowed chambers of the Green Chamber.
To my family, my entire team, and my colleagues, this award is as much
yours as it is mine”, he said.
