The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the suit filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate until March 25, 2025.
Justice Obiora Egwatu postponed the hearing after counsels to the defendants claimed they had not been served with court documents. However, counsel to the claimant, Michael Numa (SAN), insisted that all parties had been duly served, presenting affidavits of service as evidence. After reviewing the documents, the judge confirmed that all defendants had received the necessary court processes.
The case stems from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal challenge against the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, seeking to stop its investigation into her. Despite a court order restraining the committee, the Senate proceeded to suspend her for six months.
During Monday’s proceedings, counsel to the Senate President, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, requested an adjournment to allow for the harmonization of all legal processes, a move supported by other defense counsels.
Justice Egwatu granted the adjournment and ordered that all relevant documents be served on the parties before the next hearing.
Speaking on the case, Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Victor Nwaebonyi, acknowledged the importance of proper service in legal proceedings. He also remarked that while court intervention in Senate affairs is unusual, the Senate had chosen to comply as a responsible institution.
The case is set for further deliberation on March 25, 2025
