Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied reports suggesting he is planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Atiku’s media office reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, describing the claims of his defection as “untrue” and “misleading.” The statement urged Nigerians to disregard the reports, emphasizing that Atiku remains a key member of the party.
The speculation about Atiku’s possible defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) emerged amid discussions of a potential merger among opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election. However, his media team clarified that while Atiku strongly supports a coalition of opposition parties to unseat the APC, this does not equate to him leaving the PDP.
“We have observed that some news platforms are peddling unverified information that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement read.
“We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit. The former Vice President remains a principal and bonafide member of the PDP, the main opposition party.”
The statement further stressed that Atiku’s call for an opposition coalition aims to unite all political parties against the APC, with the PDP playing a central role in the alliance.
“The defection claims are an attempt to confuse Nigerians about the magnitude of the grand coalition that is at work to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the APC,” the statement added.
Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been a vocal advocate for stronger opposition unity in Nigeria
