President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology, Ogoni, in Rivers State.
President Tinubu while signing the bill at the State House, Abuja stated that, the establishment of the university was part of “decisive steps” aimed at “addressing a historical grievances” in Ogoni land.
The President said that the university will form part of Nigeria’s collective quest for exploration of sustainable clean energy for development.
He said:
“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education and sustainable development.
“I have signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology.
“Ogoni has been on the forefront of our development and agitation and has suffered environmental degradation. …to bring knowledge into that environment, in that area to me is the most significant thing from the Ministry of Education”
“It is more than the creation of a university, it is the affirmation of our unwavering commitment to the people of Ogoni, the Niger Delta and the entire nation as a whole.
“For decades, the Ogoni people have been on the forefront for the fight for environmental restoration and sustainable development shaping both national and international conversation of this critical issues.
“By signing this bill into law, we are taking a decisive step towards addressing a historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth and prosperity.
“The university will serve as a centre of Excellence, equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skill to tackle environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions and contribute to our national sustainable economic development.
Speaking on the event, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said in post shared on his social media handle that the move was a result of President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing historical injustices and fostering inclusive national development.
President Tinubu commended the members and leadership of the National Assembly and the people of Ogoni land for their commitment to the establishment of the University.
