Nigeria’s former president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obis on Thursday met behind closed doors in Abuja.
The meeting of the two frontline politicians is significant amidst speculations and pressure being mounted on the former president to run for the highest office once more in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
Many power mongers, especially from Northern Nigeria have continued to put pressure on President Jonathan to run for office. The call became louder as Mr. Peter Obi announced that he is ready to do a single tenure in office if elected.

The one term push elicited the call for Jonathan to run since he will be constitutionally barred from running for a second term if he wins the election. The unwritten north/South power sharing formular is behind the pressure on Jonathan to run. Many politicians from the north say that it cannot be guaranteed that Mr. Obi will be allowed to do only one term if he eventually wins the election.
Speaking on their meeting, Obi in a terse social media post wrote, “Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation.”
Both leaders refused to speak to the media after their meeting.
Mr. Obi and Jonathan have continued to engage with supporters and political leaders across the country as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the crucial 2027 general elections.
